KOL celebrates the Día de los Muertos festival with an exciting cross-culinary lineup.
KOL in London’s Marylebone is set to celebrate Mexico’s annual autumn festival, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). For one exclusive evening on Saturday, 2nd November, Chef Santiago Lastra and his team will be joined by some of London’s most acclaimed culinary and drinks talent for an exceptional evening of food, music, cocktails, festivities and fun.
To the kitchen, Santiago welcomes super-starred powerhouse Hélène Darroze, Chef Patron of her eponymous three Michelin restaurant at The Connaught in Mayfair and five acclaimed restaurants in France and Morocco; internationally celebrated Chef Isaac McHale and the elegant creations of his quintessentially British, two Michelin starred The Clove Club in Shoreditch; and third-generation sushi master, Endo Kazutoshi who melds imaginative innovation with immersive performance and the heritage of centuries-old Edomae-style at his Michelin starred Endo at The Rotunda in White City.
Complementing the acclaimed gastronomic line-up will be none other than the charismatic mixology-titan Ago Perrone, Director of Mixology at London’s famous Connaught Bar and his right-hand and Assistant Director, the award-winning Giorgio Bargiani, an ambassador of world-class cocktail-making in his own right.
Día de los Muertos is an annual holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, where communities and families celebrate and honour the lives of loved ones who have passed. Celebrations are far from sombre, with choruses of fireworks, live music, dancing and decorations. The carnival-like festivities, like many significant events, involve sharing and exchanging food, featuring iconic dishes like pan de muerta - a sweetened bread, or highly decorative skull-inspired artefacts and sweets which are synonymous with the holiday. Humorous, mock epitaphs (calaveras literarias) are read to living friends and acquaintances, with home altars (ofrendas) filled with the favourite foods and drinks of the departed. Such is the significance of the festival in Mexico that it garnered UNESCO recognition in 2008 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
In true Día de los Muertos style, the chefs will collaborate to create an exciting, innovative nine-course menu, with two dishes from each chef and a beverage course from the bar teams. The menu will meld individual styles and memories, culminating in a culinary experience of celebration and connection.
The evening will then continue downstairs to the KOL Mezcaleria Fiesta, where live music and all the colours of traditional art blend with the myriad flavours of mezcal, welcoming guests to celebrate in traditional Mexican street style. Expect traditional face painting, live mariachi music, and an exclusive cocktail menu curated for this night only in collaboration with Volcan Tequila.
